Alkalische voeding beschermt tegen botontkalking!

Osteoporose (botontkalking) is een sluipende ziekte die vanaf het 40e levensjaar heel geleidelijk kan inzetten. Het probleem met osteoporose is, dat je er niets van merkt zolang er geen botbreuk optreedt. Er kan al ca. 30% botmassa verloren zijn gegaan op het moment dat er plotseling sprake is van botbreuk!
Wanneer er sprake is van osteoporose zijn de osteoclasten (de afbrekers) meer actief dan de osteoblasten (de opbouwers). De botafbraak gaat dus sneller dan de botaanmaak. Hierdoor neemt de botmassa (kalk en andere mineralen) af. Met botmassa wordt de hoeveelheid bot die iemand heeft bedoeld. Ook neemt de structuur van het bot (de botbalkjes) af. Botbalkjes vormen een raamwerk van kalk en eiwitten in de botten. Dit raamwerk zorgt voor de sterkte van het bot. Het gevolg hiervan is dat de botten broos worden en er sneller fracturen optreden.
Vegetarische voeding en aminozuren
Uit een studie van biometricus Peter Deriemaeker van de Vrije Universiteit Brussel blijkt dat een vegetarische voeding het lichaam beter beschermt tegen allerlei ziekten zoals botontkalking dan een vleeshoudende voeding. Proteïnerijk voedsel zoals vlees en zuivel hebben een verzurend effect op het lichaam, terwijl een dieet met veel fruit en groenten eerder een alkalisch of basisch effect heeft. Dit heeft niets te maken met de zuurtegraad van het voedsel zelf; zo smaakt bijvoorbeeld citroen op zich erg zuur, maar na inname heeft citroen een alkalisch effect op het lichaam [1].
Eiwitten (vlees en zuivel) kunnen botontkalking dus bevorderen. Per gram eiwit gaat naar schatting een milligram calcium verloren, wat kan leiden tot het demineraliseren van botten. Eerdere studies hebben een duidelijk verband aangetoond tussen een hoge consumptie van dierlijke eiwitten (vlees en zuivel) enerzijds en het risico op heupfracturen of symptomen van lage rugpijn anderzijds [1].
Tegenstrijdig genoeg stimuleren eiwitten ook de aanmaak van bot. Of ze een positief of negatief effect hebben, hangt grotendeels af van de rest van het voedingspatroon (bijvoorbeeld het eten van voldoende groenten en fruit), maar ook van iemands genetische achtergrond, leeftijd en geslacht. Alkalische voedingsstoffen uit onder meer groenten en fruit verhogen de pH-waarde van het bloed, waardoor het bot beter beschermd wordt en minder calcium gaat afgeven [1].
In talrijke studies [2] wordt bevestigd dat door dagelijkse inname van uitgekiende aminozuren, de botcellen die belast zijn met botvorming (osteoblasten) voorkeursmatig worden gestimuleerd, vergeleken met cellen die betrokken zijn bij botafbraak (osteoclasten), hetgeen leidt tot een toename van botvorming.

Gezonde leefstijl
Als je gezond wilt eten geldt allereerst: eet gevarieerd. Het “geheim” van gezonde voeding zit niet in één product, maar in de variatie. Door veel verschillende soorten voeding te gebruiken, krijg je alle noodzakelijke stoffen binnen.
Naast gezond eten, hebben niet-roken, matig alcoholgebruik, een ontspannen levensstijl en voldoende bewegen een aanzienlijke invloed op onze gezondheid. Door een gezonde leefstijl kan de afname van botdichtheid worden geremd. Daarmee verklein je de kans op botbreuken. Bovendien helpt het om je fit houden, zodat je sneller herstelt wanneer je toch (nog) een breuk oploopt.
Roken is per definitie slecht voor de gezondheid. De algehele conditie verslechtert: rokers zijn vaak al na een kleine inspanning kortademig. De kans op ernstige aandoeningen neemt sterk toe. Ook voor je botten! Nicotine remt de aanmaak van nieuwe botcellen die nodig zijn om je botten “op sterkte” te houden.
Alcohol is niet goed voor de botten. Ook is er een grotere kans op vallen. Drink niet meer dan een glas (vrouwen) of twee glazen (mannen) per dag. Drink bij voorkeur niet dagelijks, maar sla een aantal dagen per week over of drink bijvoorbeeld alleen in het weekend.
Gezonde stress… het helpt om goede prestaties te leveren. Aanhoudende stress leidt op den duur echter tot uitputting en allerlei klachten die bij uitputting horen. Door geregeld te ontspannen wordt dit voorkomen en blijft stress iets positiefs.
Beweging waarbij de botten belast worden is veruit het beste. Goede voorbeelden zijn: wandelen, traplopen, hardlopen, dansen, tennissen, touwtje springen. Beweeg dus vooral om de botten te belasten en te werken aan de botsterkte. Zwemmen en fietsen zijn goed voor de conditie maar weinig effectief om je botten sterker te maken (bij deze beide vormen van bewegen draagt het lichaam niet het lichaamsgewicht). Werk óók aan stevige spieren, vooral de bovenbeenspieren. Men staat dan steviger waardoor de kans op fracturen afneemt. Vermijd oefeningen waarbij gevallen kan worden.
